Founder Diaries: On Structure, Softness and Safety

During uncertain times, I like to come back to the things that make me feel safe in my body. Like eating a hearty meal, staying warm, closing the window and dimming the lights.
There's something primal about seeking shelter. Long before clothes became a visual statement, they were a way to protect ourselves from the elements—a physical boundary between our bodies and the external world.
In some ways, our physical sense of safety is still tied to how our clothes feel on our bodies. Our clothes are one of the few things we are in continuous contact with throughout the day. They affect how freely we move, how our skin breathes and how we regulate temperature.
When things feel outside of my control, I find comfort in tending to this tactile experience. Feeling the weight of my clothes. Choosing fabrics that are kind to my skin. Letting them hold me and support me in the way that my body craves.

Brylee is 5'4" (163cm) and wears the Wool Cashmere Coat in Biscuit Size S.
Our Wool Cashmere Coat reflects this exact sentiment. I wanted to create a winter coat that was not only the perfect length for petite proportions, but also something that symbolised the juxtaposition of softness and strength. It’s a tension that many of us experience in our daily lives: the need to be tough but tender, brave but vulnerable.
On the outside, the dense weave of Melton wool paired with the exceptional warmth of cashmere make it highly insulating, windproof and water-resistant. On the inside, Bemberg glides over the body with ease, allowing the coat to move seamlessly against inner layers without friction.
Maybe this is what we all need right now, in our garments as well as our lives. Structure to shield us from the external world and softness to meet ourselves with compassion. I like to remind myself that boundaries are important, but so are an open mind and tender heart.
With intention,
Annie
